Rail, bus and Tube strikes this week

Strikes across London will begin from Thursday 18 August with services affected on different modes until at least the morning of Sunday 21 August 2022

The RMT, TSSA and Unite unions have announced a strike which will affect services provided by National Rail train companies on 18 and 20 August, and Transport for London services on 19 and 20 August.

Below we have put together a summary of which services are running on each day as well as a number of useful links to help you get around if you need to.

Thursday 18 August

National Rail

The strike action will affect all National Rail train operating companies. Only travel on National Rail services if absolutely necessary

Only about 20% of the rail network will be open, with a very limited service running on lines that will only be open from around 07:30 to 18:30.

If you need to travel it’s worth checking the train provider’s website and National Rail Enquiries.

Further details including information about refunds and ticket acceptance can be found on the National Rail website.

Transport for London

The majority of TfL’s services will continue to run during the National Rail strikes but some disruption is expected.

There will be a reduced service on London Overground between 08:00 and 18:00, with no service outside of these times and no service at all on some sections of the network throughout the day.

The central section of the Elizabeth line will run a reduced train service after 18:00.

There will be no service on the Bakerloo line from Queen’s Park to Harrow & Wealdstone. The Wimbledon and Richmond branches of the District line will only run between 08:00 and 18:00.

There is the potential for further disruption because some London Underground staff won’t be able to get to work.

Walking or cycling may be quicker for some journeys and planning tools are available to plan walking journeys. Santander Cycles will be available, with teams ensuring that bikes are distributed at key locations according to demand. Rental e-scooters are also available to hire in some London boroughs.

People are advised to plan ahead, check before they travel and leave more time for their journey. You can find out more details about alternative ways to make your journey on the TfL website.

Friday 19 August

National Rail

There will be very little service on the National Rail network before 08:00 following the strike the previous day

Disruption is expected on the National Rail network due to the knock-on impact of industrial action on shift patterns.

Transport for London

London Underground (including the Night Underground), London Overground (including the Night Overground), the Elizabeth Line and some London bus services will be affected by strike action.

TfL is strongly encouraging customers to avoid travelling on the Underground and only travel if essential on the rest of the network.

Strike action on London bus services will impact some routes in west and northwest London and parts of Hertfordshire and Surrey. Several routes will not be operating throughout the day and there will be no Night Bus service on the Friday night / Saturday morning. A full list of affected routes is available on the TfL website. People are encouraged to avoid making journeys on affected services until 08:00 on Sunday 21 August.
